Self Hypnosis Instruction - The Hidden Biblical Link

There still seems to be some controversy.

Although self hypnosis, or reprogramming the mind, has been proven effective in alleviating phobias, behavioral problems, addictions, and even physical ailments, there are still some people who regard this practice as a dark, shadowy endeavor shrouded in mystery and akin to witchcraft (or even politics.)

Quite frankly, I was shocked to learn that some people outside the industry even think of it as evil or demonic. I have found most of these people to be fervent Christians who honestly have no idea of what hypnosis actually is. As I too am Christian, I thought I might explain in this article exactly what hypnotism entails, how it works, and why it is imperative to living a good life ... for yourself or for God.

Hypnosis is simply the act of reprogramming one's mind. You can chose to program your mind to believe in positive things or negative things. Today, many use this therapy to stop smoking, lose weight, overcome phobias, conquer drug and alcohol addiction, defeat anxiety or depression, and many other infirmities or behavioral problems.

Contrary to popular movies or TV shows, real hypnosis is a state of focus and hyper-awareness. You don't "go to sleep." You are completely aware of everything that goes on around you ... usually in great detail. You are laser-focused. That focus remains fixated on solving whatever problem you may have. If you have ever watched television intently for more than 20 minutes, you have probably already experienced hypnotism.

I suppose the main reason why hypnosis was summarily dismissed by religion centuries ago was simple ignorance. They didn't know exactly what it was, why it worked, and so on - so they condemned it, demonized it, and taught us to do the same. However, you are about to discover a few truths mentioned in the Holy Bible that may change your way of thinking ...

Before I begin, you should know the word "hypnosis" is not mentioned in the Bible, as the term was coined well after the Bible was written. However, the practice of focus, meditation, and transformation are clearly described and encouraged within the Scriptures. Here are just a few examples:

1. Romans 12:2

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

(This is but one passage of many that encourage us to reject popular thinking and continue to renew our minds day by day. This is precisely what hypnosis entails ... throwing off negative beliefs and grabbing ahold of positive ones.)

2. Philippians 4:8

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things.

(Here, Paul encourages us to focus intently on positive thoughts, instead of harmful negative ones. Negativity usually leads to a fearful, unproductive life and we must work to remain focused on the positive.)

3. Proverbs 23:7

For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.

(Solomon had wisdom and knew that everything you can or would ever accomplish in your life began with your thought life. What thoughts are we consciously or unconsciously thinking and are they helping or hurting us? Reprogramming our minds simply must be a priority if we are to work out our own salvations, don't you think?)

As I said, these are but a few Scriptures that show the importance of taking responsibility for our thoughts, bringing each thought into captivity, and ultimately opting for a more positive way to live.

This is why I advocate self hypnosis for those of faith. Most of us Christians simply "try" to change our thinking or attitudes. We make half-hearted "attempts". However, the process of ACTIVELY reprogramming our own minds is not only more effective, but by taking control of our thought lives and doing something to change them for the better, we actually obey and fulfill those hints and instructions recorded in the Bible (like we are supposed to do:)

So, to my Christian brothers and sisters, I encourage each of you to learn a little bit more about self hypnosis and concentrate on changing any limiting beliefs in your thought life you may have. Until next time, God bless ...
